Shop update #406 (8-20-25) I made a giant 8′ x 4′ folding backdrop
A friend of mine asked me if I could make an 8′ x 4′ folding backdrop out of a full sheet of plywood. Challenge accepted!
We started off with 2 full sheets of plywood. 1 for the backdrop and the second one would be cut in half for parts to be made out of one of the halves. The other half is going to be used for another project.
We started by cutting both full sheets down into 4 – 4′ x 4′ sheets.
We took the top of sheet number one and cut an arc into the top of that half.
I then cut all of the pieces needed for hinge spacers, braces, brace holders, and legs. We drilled holes in the legs to hang weights from.
I dilled 2″ holes in the braces to make them easy to pull in and out of the holders. I gave the holes a 1/4″ roundover and also rounded over the ends that slide into the holders.
Everything was then glued and screwed into the main body of the backdrop.
I tried to explain to my fried just how tall 8′ is but he was still surprised once he saw it set up.
I’m also going to be making some smaller ones for my friend’s family. If you might be interested in the plans, please leave a comment.
