Shop update #33 (6-13-18)

On Friday night I designed a small Stuffed Animal Zoo and 2 different styles of washer toss games in Sketchup.  I also figured out a material list for them.  I estimated that I could get a minimum of 6 (maybe 8 if the cuts are good) complete washer toss games out of a full sheet of 1/2″ plywood.  Between the Zoo and the games I figured that I would need 14 – 8′ 2×4’s and a full sheet of plywood cut lengthwise into thirds.

Saturday morning I headed to my local Lowes and had them make 2 full length cuts on a full sheet of plywood at 16 1/2″ each.  Their panel cutter isn’t always accurate and that extra 1/2″ will give me a little wiggle room.  It will also help if I accidentally make my washer toss boxes a little too big.  This was the first time that I have picked up a big load of lumber in the new car and it all fit in there great.  My son helped me unload the car and we put all the 2×4’s in the Outdoor Lumber Rack.  We then headed out to Hemet for my niece’s High School Graduation party.  I brought the Kid Sized Cornhole Boards with me and the kids had fun with them at the party.

Sunday morning was all about the mitre saw.  I got all the pieces for the zoo and 6 washer toss games (3 of each style) cut down by lunch time.  I plan on working on the washer toss games next weekend but wanted to get all the pieces for both projects all cut down today.  After lunch I did a dry fit of the zoo and determined that 36″ was too tall for what I wanted to do with it so I shortened it by 12″.  During the dry fit I also figured out that this was a perfect application for pocket hole screws as opposed to my previous plan so I broke out my Kreg jig and drilled all the pockets into the cross braces.  I was then able to get everything sanded down to 120 by the end of the day.  I still need to sand the legs and outside faces to 220 but ran out of time.

I am filming a video for this project and it should be posted in a couple of weeks. I will also show more in next week’s shop update once I work on it this weekend. Thanks for asking!
