Shop update #376 (1-22-25)
I finished fixing up my coworker’s childhood chess this weekend and am very happy with the results.
I started by heating up the hide glue in a water bath and then glued the lid back on the one side. (The glue was much easier to use warmed up)
It looks like the wood shrunk on the lid and that is what caused it to come loose.
I beat and bent the hinges back into shape and also bought some new brass brads for them.
Once the hinges were installed and tested, I gave the whole box a couple of coats of a beeswax polish and called it finished.
One of or friends contacted my wife to see if we could fix a leg on their coffee table so I told them to bring it by for me to look at.
The corner brace was too far gone to repair so I chiseled it out and made a whole new one. I gave it a light coat of black spray lacquer, and then glued and screwed it in. You can hardly even tell that it was ever broken.
I made a 5 gallon bucket planter box for my wife and her mother and they never used it. It’s been sitting empty on my back patio for 2 1/2 years so I finally broke it down and got rid of it.
