Shop update #443 (5-6-26)
My sons’ Boy Scout Troop has an Eagle Scout Scholarship Fund for scouts that have reached the rank of Eagle and are going to college. They have 5 recipients this year and they asked me to make some plaques to give along with the funds.
I had some spare 1/4″ cherry left over from another project so I designed up some plaques and stands. I broke out the Wecreat Vision laser for this project.
I started by engraving and cutting out the actual plaques themselves. The laser left scorch marks on the back so sand them (front and back) smooth with some 220 grit sandpaper. The writing is on the other side.

I designed the stands by collapsing the shape of the plaque into 2 different sizes with a 77 mm x 6.5 mm slot in the top and a 50 mm x 6.5 mm slot in the bottom.

I also made some keys that fit perfectly in the slots to line them up for gluing.

I sanded the stand pieces with 220 grit as well and then glued them together.

The clamps were on for about 2 hours. When I took them off, the cherry had small marks where the clamps were placed. I was able to remove them with some 220 grit sandpaper.

I used some oil wax finish on all the parts and it really popped the grain on the cherry.

I am very happy with how they turned out and the Eagle Scouts were very happy to get them with their scholarship awards.
