Shop update #182 (4-21-21)
We hosted 4 – 2 hour pinewood derby clinics at my house this weekend. 2 on Saturday and 2 on Sunday. We were able to completely finish about 20 cars for the race next weekend!
I printed a bunch of templates that my wife would help the scouts to draw the car profiles on, cut them out, and then tape to the block of wood. They would then come to me and I would cut them out on the bandsaw with the scouts standing off to the side and watching. We would then sand them together on the belt/disc sander. They would then return to my wife and use some sanding blocks to finish them off. Once sanded the kids would paint them and set them out in the sunlight to dry. Once dry we would weigh them and add thin washers to the scale until we got as close to 5 oz as we could. We would then drill a 1 1/4″ hole into the bottom of the car and insert the washers. The last step was to then help them install the wheels.
Between the clinics, I sanded and stained the Scout Law Word Cloud plaques that I made a few weeks ago.
I also ordered a new pencil sharpener for the shop and installed in on the workbench in the corner. I’ve been meaning to get one of these forever and it was only like ten bucks on Amazon! The spot it is in is slightly awkward but it won’t be a big use item so I think that it should be OK.
