Shop update #240 (6-1-22)
I received a last minute request to make a sign for a friend. We were heading out of town on Friday afternoon for the Memorial Day weekend so I basically had 2 nights to make it.
They wanted this sign recreated but with a brown finish and the carved out letters left the natural wood color.
I programmed the letters into my XCARVE CNC machine and got the planks carved out late Wednesday night. I painted in the letters with clear paint and let them dry over night.
I sanded them Thursday night and then gave them a coat of medium walnut danish oil. It’s not as dark as I would have liked but it was the only finish that I had that would dry in time.
I got off work early on Friday, got home and glued and brad nailed some 1/4″ strip to the back to hold everything together.
It turned out that I was in too much of a hurry and wasn’t paying attention when I loaded the nail gun. I put in 1″ nails instead of 5/8″ nails and poked them all out the front of the sign.
My friend took the sign for now to give as a gift and I am going to rebuild it with a darker stain and a polyurethane finish when I have more time to work on it.
